Understanding interpersonal patterns is one thing. Measuring them is another.
Intrex offers a structured way to assess the relational patterns that shape how clients think, feel, and relate to themselves and others.
What Intrex is
A validated measurement tool used as a form of therapeutic assessment.
Helpful in developing an IRT case formulation and tracking changes over time.
A structured self-report tool that can be adapted for patients to include various attachment figures.
Maps interpersonal patterns between self and other, helpful in identifying copy processes.
How Intrex is used
- Supports case formulation by mapping a client's relational patterns
- Tracks changes in relational patterns over the course of therapy
- Helps educate patients, using visual output most people understand with brief explanation
- Customizable — attachment figures and relationships can be added over time as treatment evolves
- Measures relational processes with real or imagined others in specific contexts
- Used in formal research studies to assess relationships with self and other
- Customizable to track multiple relationships across a study's timeline
- Outputs a structured data file suitable for direct import into standard analysis tools like SPSS
Both systems are based on the SASB model, which dissects interpersonal and intrapsychic interactions into attentional focus, love versus hate, and enmeshment versus differentiation. SASB provides direct measures of what people usually discuss in therapy — their relationships with others and their own intrapsychic process — and it directly tracks connections between perceived early relationships and current views of self and relationships with others.

Need help implementing SASB in your clinical or research setting?
Explore training and consultationHow to order
Purchase SASB Intrex software, manuals, coding materials, questionnaires, or scoring methods in three steps.
Download and complete the Pricing and Order Form, the User Agreement, and the Licensing and Royalty Agreement. Clinical attestation is not required if your use is for research only.
Email the completed forms to ken.critchfield@irtinstitute.com.
Ken will reply to confirm the request and send an invoice. Your order is delivered through a secure online folder, so mailing charges no longer apply.
Note: the scoring software is dated — it runs as several .exe files with templates for data entry and output, and currently works only on a PC or PC-emulator. Files are provided as-is, with support available to confirm you've received everything correctly. Additional paid consultation on their use is available on request. Mac-compatible, more user-friendly tools are in development — check back here for updates.
Additional Information
SASB technology comes in two related forms: questionnaires and manuals for self-report assessment, and a coding manual and software for objective observer coding of interactions between two or more people. Both use the same underlying model — attentional focus, love versus hate, and enmeshment versus differentiation — to assess relational patterns in any specific context, including the connection between early relationships and current views of self and others.
Output includes cluster scores, pattern coefficients, and weighted affiliation and autonomy scores, available either as a data file for research use (compatible with tools like SPSS) or as patient-friendly hardcopy for feedback in session.
The SASB programs are stand-alone Windows PC applications, easiest to use alongside Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat. Materials are licensed separately for research/educational use and clinical use. Research and educational use means the SASB technology is used either in a formal research study conducted by qualified professional users or for education of professionals in the area of mental health. If output will be shown to raters in a research study, the feedback procedure must be approved by an appropriate Institutional Review Board. Clinical use means the SASB technology is used by a qualified professional for a clinical service and the rater (patient, client) is charged a fee for that service. Only qualified professionals who satisfactorily complete the Qualified Clinical User's form may order the technology for clinical use. Clinical use carries a modest royalty above the research rate.
The software was last majorly updated in 2000, with minor updates through 2012. It's accompanied by managers built in Acrobat, Excel, and Access that help generate graphical output — useful for case formulation, since most patients understand these visual maps with only brief explanation. Reference manuals with norms and computation methods are included.
